Scholarship/Financial Aid Resources

Federal Programs:
The following offers basic information about federal
aid. Up-to-date information can be obtained from the
college financial aid office or from the US Dept. of
Education’s web page.
Hope Scholarship Tax Credit provides
a tax credit of up to $1,500 a year for tuition costs
for each student’s first two years of college.
Pell Grants are based on need. All
applicants must begin by applying for Pell Grants, the
foundation of federal financial aid.
Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants
are available to all students and are based on need.
Federal Work-Study Programs give undergraduate
and graduate students the opportunity to work part time
to help meet the cost of education.
Direct and FFEL Stafford Loans are
the federal government’s major form of self-help
aid. Loans may be subsidized or unsubsidized. A subsidized
loan is awarded on the basis of financial need. The
student is not charged any interest before the repayment
begins. An unsubsidized loan is not awarded on the basis
of need and students are charged interest from the time
the loan is disbursed, until paid in full.
Parents Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)
enables parents with good credit histories to borrow
to pay the expenses of each dependent undergraduate
student.
Perkins’ Loans are low interest
loans available for both undergraduate and graduate
students with exceptional financial need.
AmeriCorps
is available in exchange for one or two years
of service. Education vouchers can be applied toward
the cost of college attendance or the repayment of college
loans.
